Crown Crust Pizza Recipe
Ingredients:
- For the dough:
- 1 cup warm water (105° to 115°F)
- 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- For the sauce:
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1/2 onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- For the toppings:
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- Your favorite pizza toppings (such as pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, onions, and bell peppers)
Instructions:
- To make the dough, combine the warm water, yeast, and sugar in a large bowl and let stand for 5 minutes, until the yeast is foamy.
- Add the olive oil, flour, and salt to the yeast mixture and stir until a dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- While the dough is rising, make the sauce. Heat the olive oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Add the crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper to the saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 15 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened slightly.
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it in half.
- Roll out one half of the dough into a 12-inch circle. Place the dough on a lightly greased baking sheet.
- Spread the sauce evenly over the dough, leaving a 1-inch border around the edge.
- Sprinkle the mozzarella cheese and Parmesan cheese over the sauce.
- Add your favorite pizza toppings.
- Cut the remaining half of the dough into 16 strips.
- Arrange the strips of dough around the edge of the pizza, overlapping them slightly.
- Pinch the ends of the strips together to form a crown.
- Bake the pizza for 15-20 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Let the pizza cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
Tips:
- For a more flavorful crust, brush the dough with olive oil before adding the sauce and toppings.
- If you want a crispier crust, prebake the crust for 5-7 minutes before adding the toppings.
- Feel free to get creative with your toppings! Try adding different types of meats, cheeses, and vegetables to your pizza.
- If you have any leftover pizza, it can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
Enjoy!
